Never Forget

Exposing the authoritarian threat to American democracy

Donald Trump continues to brand his political opponents as “the enemy within,” labeling them “vermin” and threatening mass arrests, prosecution, and retribution. This isn’t the rhetoric of a political campaign; it is the language of fascism, invoking the dark history of purges, censorship, and political violence.

He isn’t just hurling insults. He is echoing the language of every autocrat who’s ever sought to turn citizens against one another.

We wear that label with pride.

To him, “the enemy within” means anyone who still believes in checks and balances, the rule of law, and a government accountable to its people. To us, it means every American willing to stand up and say: no man is above the law or the constitution.

We are no longer facing a hypothetical scenario—we are living through it. Trump and his allies are actively implementing an agenda of control, vengeance, and authoritarianism, “rooting out” opposition from within the government, weaponizing federal agencies, and dismantling the few remaining checks on presidential power. Trump’s strategy is detailed in policy documents like Project 2025, where he lays out plans to consolidate his power and purge federal workers deemed disloyal.

The signs of authoritarianism are no longer hidden behind closed doors. They are in plain sight. A coordinated movement is underway, designed to erode democratic norms, demonize dissent, and place all power in the hands of one man—an unchecked ruler who sees no boundaries to his authority.

Defending Democracy in the Age of Authoritarianism

Democracy doesn’t collapse overnight. It erodes — law by law, norm by norm, truth by truth. The United States now stands at a crossroads where institutional checks are weakened and power concentrates in fewer hands.

The Enemy Within documents that erosion and connects citizens ready to respond with clarity instead of panic.

The Current Landscape

Since January 2025, the rule of law has been tested as never before — and the pattern has only deepened since:

  • Political prosecutions, still expanding: Beyond the original charges against former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and former National Security Adviser John Bolton, former CIA Director John Brennan is now suing the administration simply to force it to preserve records from the investigation targeting him — a sign this isn’t slowing down, it’s compounding.
  • Executive overreach, now with rewards attached: Presidential orders continue to defy court rulings and bypass congressional authority, while the pardon power has been used to clear a major political donor alongside individuals convicted of Clean Air Act violations — clemency deployed to reward loyalty as much as to escape accountability.
  • Militarized enforcement, at growing scale: Federal troops remain deployed against demonstrators and state leaders who opposed the administration’s orders, while ICE has escalated to roughly 10,000 arrests in a single five-day stretch.
  • Partisan capture of institutions: Civil agencies and inspectors general continue to be replaced with loyalists sworn to personal allegiance rather than constitutional duty.
  • Propaganda and intimidation, with sharper rhetoric: Beyond labeling watchdogs and opposition lawmakers “traitors” and “internal enemies,” the administration has turned to explicit Red Scare-style language, branding immigrants and political opponents a “communist menace” in a July Fourth address deliberately evoking 1950s McCarthyism.

Observers across the political spectrum — from retired generals to career civil servants — warn that these moves mirror the early stages of authoritarian consolidation seen in other nations.

Our Mission

  • Investigate — Expose the mechanics of authoritarian power, from secret directives to public propaganda.
  • Educate — Publish research, legal briefings, and guides for civic resilience.
  • Mobilize — Coordinate peaceful action through verified channels and trusted partners.

The same pattern — concentrated power evading accountability — doesn’t stop at the White House. Our Technology coverage applies the same scrutiny to the corporations building the AI systems reshaping work, culture, and information, on the same extractive logic.

Our commitment is non-violent, factual, and rooted in constitutional principles.
